[ PROCLAMATION NO. 145, April 12, 2011 ]

DECLARING THE SECOND WEEK OF SEPTEMBER OF EVERY YEAR AS SURGEONS ™ WEEK



WHEREAS, the nation recognizes that the practice of surgery plays a vital part in saving lives and maintaining good health, which are essential and indispensable for the well-being of the people and to the success of nation-building;

WHEREAS, the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) is recognized for its role in training current and prospective surgeons, which includes cancer prevention and control, infection surveillance and control, national trauma control program in cooperation with the Department of Health (DOH) and other government agencies; and its assistance to the DOH through the Surgical Manpower Development Project to upgrade and improve the competency of surgeons in government hospitals;

WHEREAS, the PCS will ultimately initiate a joint project with the DOH and the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, to expand complete coverage in surgery to Philhealth patients;

WHEREAS, Presidential Proclamation No. 462 (s. 2003) previously declared the first week of December as Surgeons ™ Week;

WHEREAS, it is the desire of the PCS that the Surgeons ™ Week coincides with PCS ™ Foundation Anniversary on the 12 th of September to make the celebration more meaningful and memorable for all surgeons in the country;

WHEREAS, it is desirable that public attention be drawn and awareness be focused on the worthy endeavors of the PCS; and

WHEREAS, it is but fitting and desirable to give recognition and tribute to the surgeons of the country.

NOW THEREFORE, I, BENIGNO S. AQUINO III, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the second week of September of every year as the new Surgeons ™ Week.

This proclamation hereby revokes Proclamation No. 462 (s. 2003).
