ADOPTION OF IAEA-TECDOC-1344 CATEGORIZATION OF RADIOACTIVE SOURCES



WHEREAS, pursuant to its authority under Republic Act No. 2067, as amended, and Republic Act No. 5207, as amended, the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as PNRI) shall establish rules and regulations for the protection of the health and safety of radiation workers and of the general public;

WHEREAS, the PNRI adopted IAEA S.S. 115 and gives recommendation for protection against exposure to ionizing radiation and for the safety and security of radiation sources;

WHEREAS, radioactive sources are widely used in the Philippines for a wide variety of beneficial purposes, i.e. medicine, industries, research, agriculture, and education;

WHEREAS, the PNRI recognizes that due to the wide variety of uses and activities of radiation sources, a categorization system is necessary so that the controls that are applied to the sources are commensurate with the radiological risks;

NOW, THEREFORE, pursuant to the powers vested on PNRI under Section 4 of Republic Act No. 5207, as amended, and Section 16-1 of Republic Act No. 2067, as amended, the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute hereby adopts IAEA-TECDOC-1344 entitled Categorization of Radioactive Sources;

This Order shall take effect fifteen (15) days after its publication in the Official Gazette or in a newspaper of national circulation.
