TEMPORARY BAN ON THE IMPORTATION OF FMD-SUSCEPTIBLE ANIMALS, THEIR PRODUCTS AND BY PRODUCTS ORIGINATING FROM THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA



WHEREAS, based on the official report submitted by  Dr. Kiyoon Chang, Chief Veterinary Officer, to the Office International des Epizooties last 07 January 2010, there was an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Korea;

WHEREAS, the FMD outbreak was reported in a dairy cattle farm in Kyonggi-do Province;

WHEREAS, there is a need to prevent the entry of FMD-susceptible animals their products and by-products originating from the Republic of Korea to protect the health of the local livestock population;

NOW, THEREFORE, I , ATTY. ARTHUR C. YAP, Secretary of Agriculture, by the powers vested in me by law, do hereby institute the following emergency measures:

1. Banning the importation of FMD- susceptible animals, their products and by-products originating from the Republic of Korea;

2. Immediate suspension of the processing, evaluation of the application and issuance of Veterinary Quarantine Clearance (VQC) to Import of the above-stated commodities from the Republic of Korea by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI);

3. Stoppage and confiscation of all shipments of FMD-susceptible animals, their products and by-products into the country originating from the Republic of Korea by all DA Veterinary Quarantine Officers/Inspectors at all major ports;

This Order shall take effect immediately.
