PHILHEALTH ADOPTS THE PHILIPPINE MEDICAL ASSOCIATION CODE FOR PROFESSIONAL SPECIALIZATION



Section 73, Rule XI of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the National Health Insurance Act (Act 7875) as amended by R.A 9241 states that œthe Corporation shall identify and recognize national associations for the purpose of assuring quality health care. 

Pursuant to this, the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), as an existing recognized national association and a nationally organized professional organization of physicians accredited by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC), remains to be recognized by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) as the umbrella organization of the medical profession and of all specialized disciplines in medicine.

Furthermore, PhilHealth shall adopt the Code for Professional Specialization (CPS) and shall recognize only the specialty societies and their sub-specialty society/ies in the eight (8) specialty divisions of the medical profession under PMA. The recognized specialty societies of the eight (8) divisions are as follows:

* Anesthesia * Pathology
* Family & Community Medicine * Pediatrics
* Medicine * Radiology
* Obstetrics & Gynecology * Surgery

Accordingly, PhilHealth shall recognize the respective members of these societies, who have passed board certification examinations and are diplomates or fellows of their respective societies, as the specialists and/or sub-specialists in their field. Likewise, PhilHealth shall follow the resolution of the PMA for any specialty society whose recognition has been suspended or terminated.

This circular shall take effect fifteen (15) days from its publication in the Official Gazette or in a newspaper of general circulation.
