[ BSP MEMORANDUM, June 17, 1993 ]
COUNTERFEIT 500-PISO NEW DESIGN SERIES NOTES
The Cash Department has recently received and confiscated counterfeit 500-piso New Design Series notes.
Please be guided by its distinguishing features as follows:
1. The paper used is of inferior quality. It is smooth/waxy to the touch and fluoresces under the ultraviolet light.
2. The security thread had been simulated by a light gray ink printed at the face of the note.
3. The simulated watermark is also printed at the face of the note with very light impression and visible when placed under the ultraviolet light.
4. The simulated security fibers are printed on the face and back of the note although few in number.
5. The lines forming the details of the lacework design, vignette and portrait are broken and are not well-defined, especially the eyes which are made up of solid mass instead of concentric lines. However, the size and spacing of the numerals of the serial numbers are similar to that of a genuine note.
6. The general appearance of the note is dull due to lack of sharpness and clarity of the main prints and the background design.
WHAT TO DO IN CASE YOU TAKE HOLD OF THIS TYPE OF NOTES
Examine carefully all suspect notes especially those with unnaturally dull general appearance as you may be holding a counterfeit. In this case, communicate with the Currency Analysis and Redemption Division or Investigation Staff, Cash Department, Central Bank of the Philippines, Tel. Nos. 50-27-77; 59-49-34; 50-70-51 Locals 2296 and 2388, or the nearest Central Bank Regional Office/Sub-Regional Office/Cash Unit.
