[ EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 268, October 29, 1970 ]

ESTABLISHING A PRESIDENTIAL AWARD IN EDUCATION



WHEREAS, 1970 has been declared as International Education Year by the United Nations General Assembly to focus attention of member states on the important role of education in the development of human resources essential to the attainment of the goals of the Second U.N. Development Decade;

WHEREAS, the value of education in promoting the country ™s enlightenment and progress, as well as world peace and understanding, is universally recognized; and

WHEREAS, it is but proper that due recognition be given to those who have helped advance education in this country particularly at this time of our observance of International Education Year;

NOW, THEREFORE I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby establish a PRESIDENTIAL AWARD IN EDUCATION which shall be granted this year, and every three years thereafter, to those who have made significant and distinctive contributions in the field of education in this country.

A Committee on the Presidential Award in Education is hereby created to plan and implement a system of giving the awards, including selection procedures, funding and other details, composed of the following:

The incumbent Secretary of Education, as Chairman, and a former secretary of Education and an outstanding citizen, to be designated by the President as members.

This order shall take effect immediately.

Done in the City of Manila, this 29th day of October, in the year of Our Lord, nineteen hundred and seventy.
